Studying statistics will equip you to perform impactful research on any given topic. Studying computer science with the core subjects of commerce prepares you to observe, understand and navigate the technology-enabled world of business. You will be able to grasp the vast scope of computer applications in the field of commerce. This opens up the possibility of studying intensive and specialized computer applications in your undergraduate college. You may even develop an interest, followed by a qualification, for the booming arena of financial technology, also known as fintech. As you study the core concepts of business, accounting and economics in parallel to the fundamentals of programming, you will know how computers have changed the world and how you can secure a high-paying IT position of utilizing computer science to solve business and management problems. Studying computer science will inspire you to start a lucrative, rewarding and global career as a software developer, IT consultant, cybersecurity analyst or game designer among many others.
You will be introduced to the system of meticulously recording business transactions in a way that satisfies the information needs of decision-makers. Along with the objectives and procedures of accounting, you will know how to create reserves and prepare financial reports for companies such as a bank reconciliation statement, balance sheet and income statement. Once you know what accounting is all about, you will be introduced to the present-day computerized system of accounting.
Advancing in your study of accountancy, the second year will teach you how to analyze the financial statements you have prepared to make decisions. You will learn accounting for partnership under various circumstances, handling financials of larger companies such as share capital and debentures and how to help nonprofit organizations manage their transactions.
Business is the foundation of the twenty-first century. In the first year of business studies, you will learn about business, trade and commerce, various types of businesses and their formation, the business of services and the emerging modes of business. You will gain a picture of internal trade and international business and know the importance of business ethics. You will also be introduced to small business and entrepreneurship, sources of business finance to foster your entrepreneurial ambitions.
During the second year, you will delve into the functions of managing organizations such as planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling, bearing in mind the universal principles of management and according to the business environment of the country and the globe. You will also be introduced to financial management, the financial markets, marketing and the importance of consumer protection.
During the first year, you will study the evolution of the Indian economy from independence to the present day, giving you insight into the current state of its features such as industry, trade and infrastructure. The theoretical study of economics will be complemented by the practical methods of statistics used to measure and analyze its various features. This includes the tabulation of economic and population data, measurement of the attributes of the data, finding correlations and causations in the data and the calculation of price indexes. You will study factors hindering the development of the country such as poverty, the potential of its human capital, employment, rural development, the concept of sustainable development and the economic policies such as liberalization, globalization that have fostered development in the country. Your basic understanding of economics will be strengthened by a comparative study of the development experiences of India’s neighboring countries.
In the second year, you will study microeconomics – the relationship between consumer behaviour and the functioning of business firms – and macroeconomics – the structure, features, performance and governance of the economy as a whole. You will know how individuals and firms make buying and business decisions given the constant scarcity of resources. Understanding how production costs are managed with product curves, you will also study competition and market equilibrium. You will know how to account for national income and measure the economic growth of nations with metrics such as GDP, GNP, HDI and more.
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of computers – hardware configuration and software concepts. You will learn the methodology of solving problems with computers – by writing programs – and the method of storing and analyzing data with Microsoft Excel. You will understand the binary storage of data in computers. Learning the C++ programming language, you will be writing programs to solve basic problems. You will also be able to design a HTML website for yourself, by the end of Year 1.
In the second year, you will learn advanced features of C++ such as constructors and function overloading. You will write programs that can process large amounts of data and perform calculations. You will also be introduced to database management systems and SQL, along with computer networks and open source. You will understand how data is stored and manipulated by computers at the fundamental level. By the end of the year, you will also know how to perform analyses and use graphs on Microsoft Excel and to publish forms on your HTML website.
Statistics teaches you the tabulation, organization, graphical representation and analysis of data. You will learn mathematical formulae that help you understand datasets and find the associations in their attributes. You will also learn how to make predictions with statistics using interpolation and extrapolation and probability.
By the end of the second year you will have mastered all the basic concepts and techniques of statistics. You will be able to analyze the features of a population with vital statistics, utilize index numbers to understand price variations and forecast sales for a company with time series analysis. Learning theoretical distributions and statistical inference methods, you will be able to control quality in a manufacturing unit and improve the operations of a business with operations research.
